Ingredients

- 1 cup yellow lentils
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the yellow lentils under cold water.
- In a pot, heat the oil and add cumin seeds.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add tomatoes, green chilies, and turmeric powder. Cook until tomatoes soften.
- Add the rinsed lentils and water. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer until lentils are soft, about 20 minutes.
- Add salt to taste and mix well.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
Notes
- This dish pairs well with rice or naan.
- You can adjust the spice level by adding more or fewer green chilies.
- For a creamier texture, blend the dal before serving.
