Description

Mujadara is a traditional Middle Eastern dish made with lentils and rice, topped with caramelized onions.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup lentils
  • 1 cup rice
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 4 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the lentils and soak for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pot, heat olive oil and add sliced onions. Cook until caramelized.
  3. Remove half of the onions for topping.
  4. Add lentils and water to the pot with remaining onions. Bring to a boil.
  5. Add rice, cumin, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  6. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes until rice and lentils are cooked.
  7. Fluff with a fork and serve topped with caramelized onions.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add garlic to the onions while cooking.
  • You can use vegetable broth instead of water.
  • Serve with yogurt or salad for a complete meal.
