Description

Italian Easter bread is a sweet, braided bread traditionally made for Easter celebrations.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon anise extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Colored eggs for decoration

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk.
  2. Add sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla, and anise extract. Mix well.
  3. Gradually add flour and salt. Knead until smooth.
  4. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  5. Braid the dough into a loaf and place on a baking sheet.
  6. Insert colored eggs in the braid.
  7. Let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes.
  9. Cool before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh yeast for best results.
  • You can substitute anise extract with orange zest.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container.
