Description

A traditional Irish bread made with whole wheat flour and baking soda.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
  4. Stir until a dough forms.
  5. Knead gently on a floured surface.
  6. Shape into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet.
  7. Cut a cross on the top of the loaf.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • For a softer crust, cover with a clean towel after baking.
  • Best served warm with butter.
