- 4 large onions, sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups grated Gruyere cheese
- 1 cup bread crumbs
Instructions
- Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook until onions are caramelized, about 25 minutes.
- Stir in thyme and beef broth. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a baking dish, layer the onion mixture and heavy cream.
- Top with Gruyere cheese and bread crumbs.
- Bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Notes
- Use fresh thyme for better flavor.
- Can substitute Gruyere with Swiss cheese.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
