Description

A savory and comforting French onion casserole with layers of caramelized onions and cheese.


Ingredients

  • 4 large onions, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups grated Gruyere cheese
  • 1 cup bread crumbs

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook until onions are caramelized, about 25 minutes.
  3. Stir in thyme and beef broth. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. In a baking dish, layer the onion mixture and heavy cream.
  6. Top with Gruyere cheese and bread crumbs.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Notes

  • Use fresh thyme for better flavor.
