Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth.
  4. Add egg and vanilla, mix well.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
  6. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut into shapes.
  7. Place cookies on baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are golden.
  9. Cool completely before icing.
  10. For royal icing, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form, then gradually add powdered sugar.
  11. Decorate cookies with royal icing as desired.
